Evaluation of Dental Pulp Volume Changes in Patients with Hypertension and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: Observational Study

INTRODUCTION: The aim of the study is to evaluate of the dental pulp volume change in patients with hypertension (HT) and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM) on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images with three-dimensional analysis.
METHODS: The observational cross-sectional study was conducted using CBCT images of patients with at least one healthy maxillary canine tooth. The patients were classified into three groups according to self-reported systemic diseases: HT group, Type 2 DM group, and control group. Volumetric (pulp/tooth volume) and linear (pulp/tooth length and pulp/tooth diameter) measurements were made. ITK-SNAP software (Cognitica, Philadelphia, USA) was used. The measurement values were statistically compared between the groups.
RESULTS: A total of 90 individuals, 30 individuals in each group, were included in the study. The mean pulp volume of the HT group (28.13±5.89) and Type 2 DM group (25.99±3.13) were lower than the control group (29.06±5.60). However, the mean pulp volume was not difference between the groups (p>0.05). The mean tooth volume was difference between the groups (p<0.05).
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: : It was found that there was no statistically significant change in the dental pulp volume of HT and Type 2 DM patients compared to healthy individuals with three-dimensional analysis.

Hipertansiyon ve Tip 2 Diyabet Hastalarında Diş Pulpası Hacim Değişikliklerinin Değerlendirilmesi: Gözlemsel Çalışma

GİRİŞ ve AMAÇ: Bu çalışmanın amacı hipertansiyon (HT) ve Tip 2 Diyabet (T2D) hastalarında diş pulpası hacmindeki değişimin konik-ışınlı bilgisayarlı tomografi (KIBT) görüntüleri üzerinde üç boyutlu analiz ile değerlendirilmesidir.
YÖNTEM ve GEREÇLER: Gözlemsel kesitsel bu çalışma, en az bir sağlıklı maksiller kanin dişi olan hastaların KIBT görüntüleri kullanılarak gerçekleştirildi. Hastalar kendi bildirdikleri sistemik hastalıklara göre üç gruba ayrıldı: HT grubu, T2D grubu ve kontrol grubu. KIBT görüntüleri üzerinde hacimsel (pulpa/diş hacmi) ve düzlemsel (pulpa/diş uzunluğu ve pulpa/diş çapı) ölçümler yapıldı. Ölçümler için ITK-SNAP yazılımı (Cognitica, Philadelphia, ABD) kullanıldı. Ölçüm değerleri gruplar arasında istatistiksel olarak karşılaştırıldı.
BULGULAR: Her grupta 30 birey olmak üzere toplam 90 birey çalışmaya dahil edildi. HT grubunun (28.13±5.89) ve Tip 2 DM grubunun (25.99±3.13) ortalama pulpa hacmi kontrol grubundan (29.06±5.60) daha düşüktü. Ancak, ortalama pulpa hacmi gruplar arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir farklılık göstermedi (p>0,05). Ortalama diş hacmi gruplar arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir farklılık gösterdi (p<0,05).
TARTIŞMA ve SONUÇ: Üç boyutlu analiz ile HT ve Tip 2 DM hastalarının diş pulpa hacminde sağlıklı bireylere kıyasla istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir değişiklik olmadığı bulunmuştur.
