doi: 10.5505/eudfd.2023.23008  Pages 1 - 8
INTRODUCTION: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the post-operative pain, facial swelling and trismus with or without applying PRF(Platelet-Rich fibrin) to the region of attraction after the withdrawal of the impacted third molars.
METHODS: Forty patients(23 male,17 female) ranging from 16-30 years age who provide the inclusion criteria were selected on this study. Patients were divided into two main groups. In the control group (20 patients), irrigated the socket by saline and in the experiment group socket filled with PRF. Patients were reclaimed 1. 3. 7. days after surgery. Post-operatively pain were evaluated with VAS(0-100), facial swelling evaluated with horizontal and vertical guide and trismus degree evaluated with maximum mouth opening quantity. These variants were also evaluated on postoperative 1. 3. 7 days.
RESULTS: Evaluations showed definite differences between the control group(without PRF) and the experiment group(PRF) in pain parameter, but no statistically significant difference was found between the other two parameters.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Using of PRF showed statistically significant diferrence between groups for pain, but not for edema and trismus.

doi: 10.5505/eudfd.2023.75046  Pages 17 - 23
INTRODUCTION: In dentistry, the maxillary sinus is a paramount anatomical formation due to its proximity to teeth. The aim of this study is to evaluate the change of the maxillary sinus volumes (MSV) in accordance with three different types of skeletal malocclusions, by using digital three-dimensional (3D) modeling.
METHODS: Overall, 158 cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images of 79 patients were analyzed. The MSV was measured using the MIMICS 19.0 software (Materialise HQ Technologielaan, Leuven, Belgium). Cephalometric angular measurement (ANB) was used to evaluate the skeletal patterns (Angle class I-II-III). The angle between Sella-Nasion and point A (SNA) was also measured.
RESULTS: The average volume of the right maxillary sinus was 12.450 cm3, while the left was 12.586 cm3. No significant relationships between MSV, age, gender, and SNA values or between the left and the right sinus were found (p>0.05). Also, MSV did not show any meaningful differences in accordance with the various skeletal types (p>0.05).
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Age, gender, malocclusion classes, and SNA values did not provide any substantial alteration on the volume of the maxillary sinus. The outcomes of this study may be beneficial in the assessment of the maxillary sinus when outlining operations such as orthodontic mini screw implantation and orthognathic surgery.

doi: 10.5505/eudfd.2023.34713  Pages 25 - 35
INTRODUCTION: Staff working in the dental clinics are under risk for Covid-19 infection. However, there has been lack of information of the dental staff other than the dentists regarding knowledge, attitude-behaviors about Covid-19. This study aimed to assess knowledge and behavior of the students and the dental staff who are under risk for infection in a faculty.
METHODS: The questionnaire consisting 3 parts and 25 questions was sent to the faculty of dentistry and vocational school students, residents, academic staff, dental clinical assistants and cleaning staff. The data were analyzed statistically by using the SPSS program.
RESULTS: Most of 208 participants (95,7%) reported that they obtained information about Covid-19 from the internet. Those who think that the level of knowledge about protection is insufficient constitutes 1.9% of all participants. The mouthwashes, 1%hydrogen-peroxide and 0.2%povidone-iodine, recommended before aerosol-generating procedures, were mostly reported by the academic staff (83.9%-44.6%, respectively) and the residents (86.5%-32.4%, respectively).
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Prevention and personal protective equipment still maintain their importance due to the slow progress of vaccination and the increasing number of cases. As the fight against Covid-19 continues, more studies are needed to evaluate the level of knowledge about the prevention involving not only the dentists but also the students and the dental staff.

Barış Başer, Burak Gülnar
doi: 10.5505/eudfd.2023.77045  Pages 37 - 41
INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study is to evaluate the ways of applying to our clinic and emergency perceptions of orthodontic patients during the complete closure period applied due to the Covid-19 pandemic in our country.
METHODS: The study included the patients still having orthodontic treatment and the patients whose treatment were completed in Karadeniz Technical University Faculty of Dentistry Department of Orthodontics. The application ways and urgent requests of the patients were recorded between 13.03.2020 - 01.06.2020 full closure dates.
RESULTS: It was observed that the applications were mostly made by phone calls. Among all the applications, the majority of the emergency request consisted of patients receiving fixed orthodontic treatment. It has been determined that the most common reason for removable appliances is duration of use and bracket debonding for fixed orthodontic treatment.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: It is understood that the number of patients receiving fixed orthodontic treatment is clearly higher when the emergency application requests are examined. So, it is necessary to be more careful in the treatment practice and mechanics of patients receiving fixed orthodontic treatment.

6. Morphometric Analysis of The Retromandibular Area In Individuals With Different Anterior Posterior Skeletal Patterns in Adolescents
Güldane Mağat, Mehmet Akyüz
doi: 10.5505/eudfd.2023.57614  Pages 43 - 50
INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to evaluate the predictability of eruption/impaction states of mandibular 3rd molars (M3M) by determining the retromandibular space (RMS), the distance between the center of the ramus and the mandibular 2. molar (RMD), the mesiodistal widths of the M3Ms (MDW) and RMS to MDW ratio (Space-Width Ratio/SWR) measurements in panoramic radiographs of adolescent individuals with different anteroposterior skeletal facial patterns. Determining the prognostic factors required for prophylactic extraction of these teeth can assist clinical decisions regarding the optimal extraction timing of M3Ms.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, a total of 554 M3Ms from 287 individuals aged 12-18 years were evaluated. RMS, RMD, MDW and SWR were analyzed according to skeletal Class relationship, age and gender.
RESULTS: Bilateral RMS, RMD, MDW and SWR values did not differ according to skeletal classification (p>0.05). Bilateral RMS values differed significantly according to age groups (p<0.01), while bilateral MDW values of men were significantly higher than women (p<0.01).
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Our findings reveal that skeletal relationships are not effective on RMS, RMD, MDW and SWR. The fact that MDW is higher in males, and RMS widens after the age of 15 shows that patient age and gender are important factors on treatment options.

doi: 10.5505/eudfd.2023.46514  Pages 51 - 59
INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of sociodemographic characteristics of adults on their oral hygiene habits and their level of knowledge about oral and dental health.
METHODS: A questionnaire was applied to 199 volunteer adults (92 female, 107 male) between the ages of 18-74 in Mentese district of Mugla province. Questionaire was applied and responses were obtained to determine the sociodemographic characteristics of the individuals, their oral hygiene habits and their level of knowledge about oral and dental health. Statistical evaluation of the data obtained was performed by Mann Whitney U test, Kruskal Wallis analysis of variance, Chi-square analysis and Spearman correlation analysis (p=0.05).
RESULTS: The frequency of tooth brushing and mouthwash usage of the participants differed according to age, gender and education level groups (p<0.05). The individuals in the 65-74 age group, men, primary school graduates had significantly less knowledge level than those in the 18-34 age group, women, high school and university graduates, respectively (p<0.05). In addition, individuals who brushed their teeth less than once a day and did not use mouthwash and fluoride agents had significantly lower oral health knowledge levels (p<0.05).
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: It has been determined that the oral hygiene habits and knowledge levels of the adults who are older and have a lower education level in Mugla province are insufficient. Considering that the data obtained reflect the majority of the population, studies to improve oral and dental health should focus on these populations.

Gülce Tosun Işık, Neslihan Ucuncu
doi: 10.5505/eudfd.2023.65872  Pages 61 - 71
INTRODUCTION: To examine tooth movements by activation of continuous asymmetrical T-loop arch wire for simultaneous incisor retraction and intrusion with 3D finite element analysis.
METHODS: 018 inch Roth brackets(MiniDiamond,Ormco,Glendora,Calif.),molar tubes(GAC International Inc. Bohemia,NY,USA),.016x.022 TMA (Ormco,Orange,Calif)asymmetric T-loop arch wire were modelled.Tooth movements resulting from the activation of the asymmetric T-loop arch wire positioned between the upper lateral and canine teeth were investigated.
RESULTS: The changes in the anterior region(upper central and lateral teeth) forces caused movement in the mesial direction. In the labiopalatinal direction, palatinal tipping was observed while the incisors were retracting. The assessment of the posterior group(upper canine, second premolar, first molar, second molar) revealed that crowns of all posterior teeth moved towards palatinal direction except second molar. In addition, mesialization in the posterior region occured more parallel to the posterior from the canine tooth. The maximum amount of movement in the vertical direction was detected in the lateral tooth, followed by the central tooth. The direction of the movement in the posterior group was opposite to the incisors.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: With the asymmetrical T-loop archwire, intrusion and retraction of the incisors can be performed simultaneously; however some extrusion takes place in the posterior region.

Semiha Ekrikaya, Sezer Demirbuğa
doi: 10.5505/eudfd.2023.15046  Pages 77 - 85
Nowadays dental caries is one of the most common chronic diseases. In dentistry, studies aiming to prevent caries by controlling biofilm acids and increasing remineralization with nanotechnology are carried out. Materials developed with nanotechnological approaches can be used successfully in preventive dentistry and restorative dentistry. In current literature studies, various studies have been carried out on the antibacterial and remineralization capacities of various monomers and metal nanoparticles. The remineralizing and antibacterial activity of various monomers and nanoparticles have been proven in the studies. These monomers and nanoparticles are promising to provide antibacterial activity and remineralization by incorporating into dental composites, cements, sealants, bases, and adhesives. For these reasons, nanotechnology has the potential to significantly improve preventive and restorative dentistry. However, information on the possible toxicity and disadvantages of nanotechnology products is limited. Longterm antimicrobial, toxic, physical, and clinical effects of nanoparticles on dental materials need to be investigated in future studies.

doi: 10.5505/eudfd.2023.76476  Pages 87 - 92
An 8-year-old girl was referred to our clinic with complaints of skeletal Class III, anterior crossbite and unilateral posterior crossbite and dental crowding. A combination of fixed and removable appliances was applied simultaneously to treat both orthodontic and dentofacial orthopedic anomalies at the same time. To resolve the transversal direction and sagittal direction discrepancy at the same time, a cap splint appliance with an expansion screw and hooks for the facemask combined with the application of a protraction facemask was applied. After the anterior and posterior crossbites were treated, during the retention period, brackets were applied to the bonded cap splint to align the teeth and to use it as an anchor unit, and to the maxillary anterior four incisors to achieve alignment and leveling. The total treatment time was 6 months with this application, which was made to use the reinforcement time efficiently for maxillary expansion and to eliminate the need for another application. A proper overbite and overjet; dissolving the crowding of the incisors; A good transversal and sagittal directional relationship of the jaws and a suitable soft tissue profile were obtained.
